Participants in the Fountain Lake 5 and the Southwest Middle School Tiger Trot will wear green ribbons Saturday during their races to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“I think it’s nice to show our support to them as runners and fellow fitness people,” said Fountain Lake 5 organizer Susie Hulst, the sports fitness director at the Albert Lea Family Y. “We know what hard work it takes to get to Boston, and then to have someone crush that dream or crush that experience for someone, that would be heartbreaking.”

The races come less than a week after two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 180.

A massive manhunt is under way to find one of two suspects believed to be responsible. The other suspect is believed to be dead after the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer on campus late Thursday night and shootout with police.

“It’s a tragedy,” said Hulst about the bombings.

She said participants will be given the green ribbons to pin to their T-shirts after they register for the race Saturday morning.

Fountain Lake 5 and the Tiger Trot begin at 9 a.m. from Brookside Education Center. Registration starts an hour prior.

The Fountain Lake 5 covers a 5-mile span around Fountain Lake. The Tiger Trot is a 5k fun run or walk that is a fundraiser for the middle school.

The registration fee for the Tiger Trot is $5 for seventh-graders and younger or $20 for all others. Registration for the Fountain Lake 5 is $29.
