Navy seaman recruit Matthew W. Leon, the son of Susan Gladso of Albert Lea and Peter F. Leon of Bingen, Wash., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

The seaman completed eight weeks of classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Leon is a 1997 graduate of Milford High School of Mildford, Mich., and a 2009 graduate of the University of Michigan.
