John Cady, 79, Hayward

Memorial services for John F. Cady, of Hayward, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theodore Catholic Church of Albert Lea. The Rev. Timothy T. Reker will officiate. Friends may visit with family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Military honors will be accorded by Albert Lea veterans organizations. Interment will be in St. Theodore Catholic Cemetery.
John died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at his home. He was 79.
He was born on Nov. 12, 1933, in Forman, N.D., the son of Howard and Frances (O’Neil) Cady. John graduated from Forman High School. John proudly served in the U.S. Navy stationed in Brunswick, Maine.
On Nov. 15, 1952, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Seelhammer in Cogswell, N.D.
After he received his honorable discharge from the Navy, John completed electrical training at North Dakota School of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. He was hired by IBM and John and Mary Jane lived in Minneapolis until 1963. He continued to work for IBM but they made their home in Hayward. John retired in 1985. Following his retirement, they built a home in Alexandria, where they lived until returning to Albert Lea in 2010. John was always involved in the communities in which he lived. He had volunteered for the Hayward Fire Department, Hayward Boosters, the Lions, Elks and Lakes Planning Commission in Alexandria, served on the Albert Lea school board and had been involved in Boy Scouts throughout his life. He was an active member of St. Theodore Catholic Church where he enjoyed helping with religious education.
John had his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his airplane. He was an avid outdoorsman and had many memories of trips to the Boundary Waters area. John’s greatest joy came from gathering his whole family and just being together.
John his survived by his children, Kathy (Roger Hoffman) Cady of Virginia, Mike (Kaye) Cady of Cave Creek, Ariz., Bob Cady of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Jim (Nancy Carpenter) Cady of Albert Lea, Mary Cady of Minneapolis and Judy Cady of Albert Lea; grandchildren, Laura Hoffman, Meghan (Dan) Balfe, Sara (Brad) Carlson, Kelsey Paulson, John McCauley and Eva McCauley, Cam (Dana) Schember, Kade Schember, and Ryan Hoffman; great-grandchildren, Mady Balfe, Jenna Balfe, Tyler Balfe, Ayden Paulson, Ava Schember, and Evan John Balfe on the way; siblings, Warren (Ella) Cady of Nevada, Elmer (Polly) Cady of California, Jean (Agnes) Cady of Washington, Donald Cady of California, Joan (Doc) Colby of Minnesota, Ruby (Doran) Kersting of North Dakota; and in-laws, Jack (Betty) Seelhammer and Barbara Seelhammer of Minnesota, Deanna Cady of Arizona; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane Cady; son, Dave Cady; and siblings and other relatives. John will be remembered by his family as “One of a Kind” and will be fondly remembered for the great example he has set for them!
