Warm temps contrast icy lakes

MINNEAPOLIS — Summer-like temperatures are drawing Minnesotans to the sandy beaches of lakes that are still filled with ice.
On the north side of Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, children in shorts and T-shirts enjoyed the warm sunshine and walked on the ice chunks that collected at the shoreline.
Maddy Colbert found irony in the fact that it was so warm, but the lake was still partially frozen. Colbert biked along the lake Sunday and figured she wouldn’t be seeing a sailboat for a while.
Boaters from the Wayzata Yacht Club were out trying to break up the ice on Lake Minnetonka, so it wouldn’t damage boats and docks.
The late ice is in contrast to 2012, which had one of the earliest ‘ice out’ dates for lakes in the state.
