The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office has suspended all open burning for Tuesday due to strong winds, high temperatures and dry conditions expected throughout the day, according to a news release.

Weather conditions with cooler temperatures and lighter winds are expected to return to the area on Wednesday. If conditions moderate as expected, open burning will resume.

The suspension does not include a restriction on recreational fires as defined by state law.

Freeborn County has adopted a Burning Ordinance governing open burning. Although written burning permits are no longer issued, all people wishing to burn are required to call the Sheriff’s Office to provide information on the location of the burn and who is responsible. During the burning suspension, people who call to provide that information will be informed of the burning restriction and will not be allowed to burn. Anyone violating the burning ordinance or who chooses to burn during a restricted time period is subject to citation and fines.
