Walk on Saturday will fund research

Albert Leans Earl and Ruth Thompson know first-hand the effects of Parkinson’s disease.
Five years ago, during an annual checkup, Earl received his own diagnosis.
“I really didn’t know a whole lot about Parkinson’s at the time,” he said. “I had an uncle that had it but he didn’t live around here.”
Since then, Earl, now 82, has been placed on medication, which he said has worked well to control his symptoms. He also has worked diligently to eat healthy and exercise, which he said also play a factor.
Earl and Ruth are speaking out about the disease in advance of the second-annual Southern Minnesota Walk for Parkinson’s Disease, sponsored by the Southern Minnesota Parkinson’s Support Group.
The walk is slated from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Northbridge Mall.
“You may not be dealing with it at this point, but you never know, someone close to you may have it someday,” Ruth said.
All money raised from the walk will go to support research, education and respite care.
Tax deductible donations can be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, the National Parkinson Foundation Minnesota or the support group.
According to the National Parkinson Foundation, Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that causes shaking, slowness of movement, stiffness or rigidity, and trouble with balance, among other symptoms.
About 60,000 Americans are diagnosed with the disease each year.
The Thompson’s encouraged area residents to attend the fundraiser walk.
People can form a team or just stop by.
There will be information handed out, along with prizes.
