50 years ago – 1963

• Ken Sibilrud was the winning pitcher, he hit a home run and double for Hartland in its 11-6 win over Grace Lutheran in a National Division softball game in the Albert Lea Church Softball League.

• Clair Friday had three hits, including a home run and a triple, for Church Offset in its 8-7 win over the Tribune in the Albert Lea Slow Pitch League.

• The Albert Lea High School boys’ golf team defeated Faribault 156-204. Scores for the Tigers were Craig Plante, 37, Dick Jones, 38, John Huret, 40, Dick Davies and Dexter Westrum, 41.

• The Albert Lea Packers baseball team defeated Austin 8-5 in an exhibition game. Jim Borcherding was the winning pitcher,  and the offense was led by Gabby Pierce, Don Fogel and Neil Pierce.

 

25 years ago – 1988

• The Tiger City Sports team won the Men’s “C” Volleyball National League title. Team members were Joel Karsjen, Gary Hillman, Marty Little, Tom Jones, Ross Vermedahl and Jim Troe.

• Winners in the Albert Lea Men’s Bowling Association Tournament were Steve Newman, singles, Darrel Roemmich, All-Events Handicap, Roemmich and Larry Matthes, Doubles, and Dan Breeden, All-Events Scratch. Aragon 10 won the team title. Team members were Mike Lammers, Don Freeman, Kevin Richardson, Kevin Freeman and Rich Chapman.

• The South Central baseball team remained undefeated in the Border League at 6-0 with a 9-0 win over Alden-Conger-Freeborn. Steve Benson pitched a four-hitter and Brian Ehlert had two hits for S.C.

10 years ago – 2003

• The Albert Lea high school softball team split a doubleheader with Mankato West, winning the first game 4-3 and losing the night cap 9-0. Jerri Mondeel had four hits in the first game for Albert Lea and Jess Hanson had three hits for Albert Lea in the second game.

• The Glenville-Emmons  boys golf team defeated Houston 172-179 and won its first ever golf title. Scores for the Wolverines were Matt Webb, co-medalist at 40, Kelsey Martinson, 43, Luke Klingson, 44, and Seth Holstad, 45.
