Albert Lea wrestlers are 4th heading into state

The Albert Lea wrestling team was ranked fourth Friday in the Class AAA state rankings published by TheGuillotine.com.

The top six ranked teams stayed idle as the Tigers have been ranked fourth since Feb. 11.

The Tigers’ Garrett Wangsness jumped into the 119-pound rankings at No. 7 after beating then N0. 3-ranked Nick Scheffert on Feb. 19. Scheffert dropped to No. 9.

Carter Kortan, who lost to Owatonna’s Ben Zeman on Feb. 19 on a torn ACL, dropped from No. 6 to No. 7. Kortan did not participate in Friday and Saturday’s Section 1AAA individual tournament.

Many ranked Tigers wrestlers held their position in Friday’s rankings including No. 3 Dakota Wangsness (103), No. 5 Trey Hable (145), No. 2 Dalton Westerlund (152), No. 3 Cory Hansen (160) and No. 7 Carter Kortan (189).

The Class AAA state tournament begins Wednesday at the Excel Center in St. Paul.
