Teenager airlifted after crash

NORTHWOOD — A 16-year-old Northwood boy was seriously injured Thursday afternoon after his car was struck by a semi on U.S. Highway 65 south of the Minnesota and Iowa border, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

Connor Elliott was airlifted to Mercy Hospital for injuries he sustained in the crash.

Elliott was driving westbound on 500th Street in a 1990 Honda Civic when he stopped at the stop sign at the road’s intersection with Highway 65 and then turned south on the highway into the path of a 2012 Freightliner semi driving northbound, an Iowa State Patrol report states.

The semi, which reportedly struck the driver’s side door of the car, was driven by Trieu Chipman, 45, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. It was listed to Evans Trucking out of Westbank, British Columbia, Canada.

The report stated the car entered the east ditch and came to rest in the northeast corner of the intersection facing south.

The semi came to rest on the west shoulder of the highway.

The State Patrol does not list whether the drivers were wearing seat belts. The incident took place at 4:43 p.m.
