TOFTE — Just as the summer tourism season is getting started, a fire damaged five units at the popular Bluefin Bay resort.
Anywhere from 80 to 100 guests were evacuated during the Saturday fire, but there were no injuries.
Dennis Rysdahl, general manager and owner of the resort, said by nightfall guests in the damaged units were sent to alternative lodging and other guests were allowed to return to their units.
There is no official word on what caused the fire at the resort along the Lake Superior shore, about 80 miles northeast of Duluth. Rysdahl said it was discovered after a maintenance worker noticed smoke. Four of the resort’s units were damaged by the fire itself, and the fifth sustained water damage.
Rysdahl said the resort, which houses between 250 and 300 people, was nearly full this weekend.
“Starting at this time of year, every day is like a Saturday,” he said. “So this was a particularly bad time for this to happen.”
