Editorial: Look for children while driving

School let out last week for many children in the region, and we want to remind motorists to watch for children on bikes and walking around neighborhoods during normal work hours.
Albert Lea is a city of 18,016, according to the 2010 census. But the Census Bureau also estimates that the daytime population for Albert Lea to be more like 20,534. That, of course, is because of the draw the city has for people working and shopping.
It stands to reason that during the day, when there are more kids playing and frolicking outside, there are more cars driving in the city.
And good weather means motorcycles. They tend to be out in the afternoons.
In general, during the warm months, there is more stuff for daytime drivers to be watching: motorcycles, bicycles, kids crossing the road improperly, you name it. Be careful out there. Slow down. Don’t look only for other cars. Be ready for two-wheeled vehicles and pedestrians. Keep a watch out for the children of our fair city. We want them to enjoy their summer break, not end up in a hospital.
