NEW YORK MILLS — One man is dead after witnesses say another man shot him and then shot himself in New York Mills, according to a news release from the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies received a 911 call just after 9 p.m. Wednesday from a woman who reported gunshots fired in the 57000 block of County Hwy. 56 in New York Mills. A 20-year-old man with gunshot wounds was found dead at the scene.
A 23-year-old man with gunshot wounds was unconscious, taken by ambulance to Wadena Tri-County Hospital and was airlifted to a hospital in St. Cloud. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office was reportedly informed that he is in critical condition and on life support. The Sheriff’s Office was initially informed that the man had died, according to the news release.
Witnesses at the scene reportedly indicated the 23-year-old man shot the 20-year-old, then shot himself.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the people involved in this were acquaintances,” said Otter Tail County Chief Deputy Stacy Paulseth.
An ex-girlfriend of the 23-year-old man, along with her present 20-year-old boyfriend, went to the residence of the older man, to pick up a couple of dogs that belonged to the woman, according to Paulseth.
The identities of the people involved were not released Thursday morning, pending notification of families.
The investigation is ongoing.
