Southland puts down Wolverines quickly

A faster attack and better hitting by Southland left the Glenville-Emmons volleyball team still searching for its first win of the season following a 3-0 loss to the Rebels Tuesday in Glenville.
Southland scored a 25-21, 25-16, 25-16 win over the Wolverines with a quick attack that featured a change of speeds at times that kept Glenville-Emmons off balance throughout the night.
“They froze us,” said Wolverines head coach Lisa Ziebell. “Their setter did a really good job up at the net.”
Glenville-Emmons struggled with its own hitting throughout the contest and failed to land a number of kills, something Ziebell said comes from being too anxious.
“I just think they’re anxious and they know they can do better,” she said. “They’ve got to relax and let things happen and let it flow. We’re just forcing things right now.”
Emily Belshan turned in a strong performance for the Wolverines as she got it done from behind the service line and at the net. Belshan accounted for 14 points with four ace serves as she finished 17-for-18 from the service line. She also recorded five blocks, including three in a row at one point and one ace block. Belshan also finished with three kills.
Alayna Hall led the team with 13 digs and Kalli VanRyswyk was only able to come through with two kills as the offense played haltingly.
“At times tonight I thought, ‘Wow, we’re gelling’ … other times it was like we’ve never played together,” Ziebell said. “I know these kids can do much better than what we did tonight.”
Southland made life difficult at times with its athleticism and ability to hit.
“Southland did a great job of freezing us and hitting it where we weren’t and picking on some spots,” Ziebell said.
The Wolverines travel to Grand Meadow Thursday.
