A colorful week is ahead because Albert Lea High School is celebrating Homecoming next week.

A pep rally was held Tuesday to announce candidates for Homecoming royalty, but most events are next week before the big football game Sept. 20. On Monday, the coronation of the Homecoming Court will be at 2 p.m.; the public is invited to attend.

The girls on the court are: Sydney Rehnelt, Kelly Kaasa, Bryn Woodside, Carol Lein and Julia Otten. The boys are: Reed Willet, Zach Lind, Larry Holcomb, Preston Smith and Tyler Vandenheuvel.

Monday also starts the dress-up days for students and are:

• Dress up like twins on Monday.

• Wear your class colors on Tuesday.

• Wacky Wednesday.

• Wear your bling on Thursday.

• School spirit/cherry and blue day on Friday.

There will be another pep rally on Tuesday for fall sports and activities, and school will let out at 1 p.m. Sept. 20 to start the afternoon field day. The Tigers play Mankato East at 7 p.m. Sept. 20.

High School Principal Jim Wagner said Homecoming is a fun time for students to show their school spirit. It’s also a time for alumni to come back to the school to see what’s new. Wagner said he hopes students are responsible and make good decisions during all the festivities.

“We want everybody to be safe and have a good time that’s positive and enjoyable,” Wagner said.

Other sporting events during Homecoming Week are: girls’ tennis at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Blue Earth, cross country at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Fairmont, boys’ soccer at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rochester John Marshall, girls’ soccer at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against Rochester John Marshall, girls’ tennis at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at home against Rochester Century, girls’ soccer at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rochester Mayo, boys’ soccer at 7 p.m. Thursday at Rochester John Marshall, volleyball at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Mankato East, girls’ tennis at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Mankato East and girls’ swimming at 6 p.m. Thursday at home against Rochester John Marshall.

Superintendent Mike Funk told the school board at a meeting Monday evening that the public will likely see a big change at Hammer Field. Some wooden bleachers that were deemed unsafe have been removed. Funk said activities staff are working to make sure there’s enough seating for the Homecoming football game.
