Blocked PAT ends Bulldog comeback

With less than 30 seconds to play the Lake Mills football team appeared like it was heading for overtime Friday against Forest City in Lake Mills, but a blocked extra point resulted in a 21-20 loss to the Indians in the Bulldogs’ home opener.

Lake Mills quarterback Royce Byrnes hit Logan Strusz in stride on a go-route from the Forest City 35-yard line and Strusz crossed into the end zone to make the game 21-20. The Bulldogs trotted out the kicking team once more after kicker Jake Brekken had converted his other two PAT tries, but this time Forest City (2-0) broke through the line and blocked the kick, handing Lake Mills (0-2) its second consecutive loss to start the season.

“I’m obviously disappointed with a one-point loss, but it was an outstanding performance by our kids,” said Bulldogs head coach Bill Byrnes. “It was just a great high school football game.”

The touchdown completed a 98-yard drive that started after Lake Mills stopped the Indians on a fourth-and-goal from their own 2-yard line.

Lake Mills trailed 14-7 at halftime, but Chris Throne hauled in a 69-yard touchdown pass to tie the game after a Brekken extra point in the third. Forest City regained the lead when Andrew Rosacker found Jordan Westerberg for an 11-yard touchdown reception. It was the second touchdown catch for Westerberg in the game and he finished with 13 catches for 113 yards. Rosacker completed 10 of his 25 passes for 151 yards.

The Bulldogs held an edge in total offense 336-322 and picked off Rosacker three times.

Brekken had his first 100-yard rushing performance of the season and added 18 tackles on defense.

Byrnes finished 5-for-10 with 155 yards passing and two interceptions.
