WINONA — The Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona is about to take care of a nice problem: having too much high-quality art and not enough room to display it.

The museum will unveil a 2,500-square foot gallery addition today. That’s enough space to showcase between 25 and 30 works by European artists.

“The core of the museum is its collections,” executive director Andy Maus said. “We really need to provide more of an experience that is the best we have to offer.”

The $1.4 million expansion was funded mainly by the Slaggie Family Foundation, with some private donations.

The art museum began with a strong focus on maritime art. It has since broadened to explore artists’ relationship with water and to introduce visitors to master painters.

This spring, the museum added new pieces by Wassily Kandinsky, Theodore Robinson, Piet Mondrian, Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth. Earlier this month, the museum unveiled another seven new additions, including works by Paul Gauguin, Alfred T. Bricher, Andre Derain and others.

Those names joined the likes of other artists such as Pablo Picasso, Georgia O’Keefe, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Chzanne.

The museum also features traveling exhibits. Currently on display are selections from the St. John’s Bible project and a photography exhibit by John Stanmeyer, “Sacred Waters,” which explores humans’ religious and spiritual relationships with water around the world.
