MINNEAPOLIS — GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann has turned about $14,000 in past campaign contributions over to a bankruptcy trustee for a Florida businessman who was linked to a big federal fraud case in Minnesota.
Bachmann’s payments to the trustee for Frank Vennes are reflected in her latest congressional campaign report that was filed Tuesday. Vennes was an associate of Tom Petters, who is serving a lengthy prison sentence in a Ponzi scheme.
Vennes has pleaded guilty to fraudulently raising money for investment in Petters’ company. His political donations to Bachmann were made between 2006 and 2008.
Altogether, the trustees in the Petters fraud case have been trying to recover an estimated $500,000 in contributions by Petters and his associates to an array of politicians.
