The Albert Lea High School music department will present its first concert of the year on Oct. 29. The concert will be at Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea at both 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. to accommodate the traditionally large crowd. The concert will feature the ALHS Tiger orchestra, and the symphony orchestra, directed by Rebekah Crissinger, the new eighth grade women’s choir directed by Mary Bissen, and the concert choir, varsity choir and Tiger choir, directed by Diane Heaney.

The orchestras will be performing arrangements of classical favorites including, Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony, Sinfonia in D which features a lovely cello duet and Londonderry Air. The Symphony Orchestra is also excited to share a jazz piece titled, “Northridge Drive.”

All four choirs will perform both secular and sacred works including folk songs from the United States, Scotland and Jamaica. This concert will feature the debut of the eighth grade women’s choir with new teacher, Bissen. Among the pieces the concert choir will sing is “Shenandoah” and “Witness.” They will join with the chamber orchestra to perform “Sicut locutus est” by Bach. The finale piece with all the choirs will be “Imbakwa,” a song from Tanzania.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for adults and $5 for seniors and students and are available at the door. There will also be a $35 family pass sold at the door that will admit a family to all regular orchestra, band and choir concerts for the whole year.

There will also be a choral concert with the University of Minnesota Chorale and soloists from the voice faculty pairing with the ALHS concert choir and high school soloists on Nov. 7.
