Scott Aamodt of Lake Mills beat 115 runners on his way to 13th place at the Class 1A state cross country meet Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

“Scott had a great race,” said Lake Mills head coach Parker Comentino. “He went out controlled and started picking off other runners, moving up one-by-one after the first mile.”

After holding about 35th place near the first mile mark, Aamodt made his move. Comentino said Aamodt passed 10 runners each mile after the first mile and caught a few at the finish line.

“I was pretty happy with the finish,” Aamodt said. “I closed in on the last 50 meters.”

Four runners crossed the finish line within two-tenths of a second of each other. North Butler’s Caleb Wedeking took 12th, Aamodt finished one-tenth of a second later and one-tenth of a second ahead of Marquette Catholic’s Lucas Schmidt.

Aamodt, a junior, competed at state for the second time. As a sophomore, he took 26th place. If he splits his place in half again, he’ll finish in the top 10 as a senior.

“He’s a great kid to coach, and hopefully next year he’ll be bringing home some hardware,” Comentino said.

Aamodt stays busy with sports all year long. He plays basketball in the winter, runs track in the spring and plays baseball in the summer.
