The 2008 murder of Austin native Beau Zabel could soon be solved.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office issued an arrest warrant to 35-year-old Marcellus Anthony Jones Tuesday for Zabel’s murder, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Inquirer reports witnesses, including relatives of Jones, have come forward to testify Jones bragged about the murder of Zabel, 23, and Tyrek Taylor, 20, Jones’s accomplice who allegedly complained about Zabel’s murder.

Jones was already serving a life sentence for killing Taylor, the suspected getaway driver in Zabel’s murder, so Taylor couldn’t speak to police.

Beau Zabel — a 2003 graduate of Austin High School and 2008 graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. — was 23 and had been in Philadelphia only six weeks when he was shot in the back of his neck while walking home from his summer job at a Starbucks late on June 15, 2008. Before he died, Beau was accepted to Drexel University in Philadelphia, and planned to teach math and earn his graduate degree.

With no witnesses and little physical evidence, there were few solid leads for investigators, even with a $35,000 reward and segments on America’s Most Wanted.

In recent weeks, sources said, at least three of Jones’ family members and friends have been interviewed by detectives from the Homicide Special Investigation Unit, which specializes in cold cases.

The break came last month, when detectives received a letter from an acquaintance of Jones’ who said he had knowledge of the case.
