Arlo McGonigle, 90, Austin

Arlo M. McGonigle, 90, of Austin, died Saturday morning, March 12, 2011, at his home.

He was born May 6, 1920, in German Township, Kossuth County, Iowa. He grew up in Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he attended high school. On June 27, 1941, he married Jessie Wentzel in Austin. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1937 to 1957. Arlo served on active duty during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

After retiring from the Navy, Arlo and his family returned to Austin where he worked at the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1984. He was a loving, caring family man who always put his family first. In his retirement years, he enjoyed reading and caring for his cats.

Survivors include his brother, Cecil McGonigle (Viva) of Austin; daughters, Dawn Pedersen of Poway, Calif., and Cathy Kelly of Austin; sons, Arlo Wayne McGonigle of Columbia Heights, Minn., Duane McGonigle of Brownsdale, Timothy McGonigle of Big Lake, Minn.; four grandchildren, Corey McGonigle, Kristen Kelly, Brian Kelly, Samuel McGonigle.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie; brother, Ronald; parents, Ray and Eunice.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at Mayer Funeral Home with the Reverand Dale Christiansen officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Tuesday. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
