Snow is expected to fall starting tonight and lasting through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The southern tier of Minnesota counties and the northern tier of Iowa counties can expect 2 to 4 inches Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather service states. So will the Rochester and Winona areas.

It says northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin are likely to see 9 to 15 inches. The rest of Minnesota can expect 4 to 9 inches.

Most the state is in a winter storm warning.

“Strong northwest winds will generate near-blizzard conditions in western Minnesota by midday Wednesday,” the Chanhassen bureau of the National Weather Service reports. “Very cold air will follow the storm and will last into the weekend.”

Parts of southern Minnesota are in a winter weather advisory, including Waseca and Steele counties, through Wednesday. Some areas, including Freeborn and Faribault counties, are in a dense fog advisory through noon Wednesday.

A map from the weather services shows Albert Lea expected to get 2.5 inches, Rochester 2.6, Mankato 4.3, Minneapolis 6.3, Willmar 6.8, Fergus Falls 7.1, Little Falls 9, Duluth 14.6.

Northeast Iowa also is in a dense fog advisory.
