Editorial: Autumn is early, but it can stay late

It sure feels like it is autumn.
University of Minnesota Extension Service Climatologist Mark Seeley reported last week that the mean monthly temperature for August was so far 2 to 4 degrees cooler than normal. He said it was the fourth consecutive month in Minnesota with cooler-than-normal temperatures.
August is usually known for being the dog days of summer, with sweltering humidity, annoying bugs and purring air conditioners.
The August of 2009 was one of open windows, outdoor living and sweatshirts and blue jeans.
Most everyone we know agrees: We like the cool weather. We just hope it doesn’t indicate an early onset of cold weather.
Since autumn of 2009 seems to have started early, we officially invite it to stay late, too. Let’s have football weather all through football season.
