The Lake Mills wrestling team began the season by going 2-1 at a quad Thursday at Riceville.
The Bulldogs beat Riceville 45-18, St. Ansgar 42-30 and lost 60-18 against Sumner-Fredricksburg.
“I was really excited to go 2-1, because I was expecting to go 1-2,” said Lake Mills head coach Alex Brandenburg. “Half of the kids weighing in for us are freshman, so I think we will only get better as the season goes along.”
Against Riceville, the Bulldogs won the first eight matches with pins by Krister Beal, Michael Olsen, Brady Schmidt and Grant Boehmer, a decision by Scott Wogen and three forfeits.
Lake Mills continued its domination of the low weight classes against St. Ansgar. The Bulldogs reeled off eight straight wins again to start the match with a 42-0 lead. This time, Beal, Wogen, Schmidt and Noah Irons won by fall, Olsen and Slade Sifuentes won by decision and two Bulldogs won by forfeit.
“We were really aggressive and wrestled well tonight, especially against St. Ansgar,” said Coach Alex Brandenburg. “I really didn’t think we’d be able to beat them tonight with all the guys we still have out, but our middle weights dominated to build a huge lead.”
Against Sumner-Fredricksburg, Noah Irons earned his third fall of the evening by pinning Isaiah Brandt in 3 minutes, 10 seconds. Cory Mathahs earned pinned Dustin Lenz in 1 minute, 36 seconds in the heavyweight class, and the Bulldogs earned another win by forfeit.
Next, Lake Mills will host a triangular with Blue Earth and Maple River at 5 p.m. Friday.
