USC trio takes 1st at Redwood Riot

Three wrestlers from United South Central were champions in their weight classes at the fourth-annual Redwood River Riot.
The Rebels tied Tri-City United for 10th place as a team at the tournament on Friday and Saturday.
USC’s Dylan Herman — the No. 3-ranked wrestler in Class A at 145 pounds — cruised through the bracket with falls in the first two rounds. He beat Kody Curry of St. James in the quarterfinals with a 7-2 decision, and he beat Jack Citrowske of Canby in the semifinals with a 16-2 major decision.
To win the 145-pound title, Dylan pinned Nick Wame of Rocori in 3 minutes and 40 seconds.
Dylan’s brother, Derek Herman, also won his weight class. Derek — the No. 4 wrestler in Class A at 152 pounds — also pinned his first two opponents. In the quarterfinals, he beat Dylan Johnson of Quad County by technical fall, and he beat Zach Motschke of Sartell with a 6-1 decision in the semifinals.
Derek won the 152-pound title with a 2-1 decision over Joe Weber of Fairmont/Martin County West.
USC’s Colten Carlson dominated the 182-pound bracket. After a first-round bye, he pinned his next three opponents. To win the championship, the beat Christian Full of Canby with an 8-2 decision. Carlson is ranked No. 2 in the Class A polls.
Brett Byrne of USC also placed. He took eighth place in the 120-pound weight class with a 4-2 record at the tournament.
USC will be back in action starting Friday at the Rumble on the Red two-day tournament in Fargo, N.D.
