Four wrestlers from the area placed at the Rumble on the Red wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.

Out of 69 teams, Albert Lea finished in 20th place and United South Central took 13th.

Albert Lea’s Garrett Aldrich — the No. 7-ranked wrestler in Class AA — took fifth place at 106 pounds. After a first-round bye, Aldrich won his next two bouts. He lost in the quarterfinals to Apple Valley’s Kyle Rathman — the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Class AAA — with an 11-2 major decision.

However, Aldrich fought back in wrestlebacks with an 8-1 decision over Jackson Stauffacher of Scott West and a pin over Reuben Cephas of Rosemount in 2 minutes and 7 seconds.

A loss in the next round landed Aldrich in the match for fifth place, which he won with a 3-1 decision over Naser Ali of Eagan.

“He (Aldrich) has figured out what it takes to win in these big tournaments and how to win big matches,” said Albert Lea head coach Larry Goodnature. “He’s coming on really strong.”

Beau Johnsrud and Tim Christianson at 120 and 182 pounds were one win away from placing, Goodnature said.

The Tigers take the mat next at 7 p.m. Thursday against Rochester John Marshall at home.

United South Central was led by Colten Carlson, who earned the top area finish with fourth place in the 182-pound weight class. Dylan Herman took sixth place at 145 pounds and his brother, Derek Herman, finished in eighth place at 152 pounds.

All three Rebels began the tournament 3-0.

“It was a great weekend for USC wrestling,” said USC head coach Marcus Eytcheson. “If you look at the list of teams placing above us, only one is from a Class A school. We’re very happy with how the boys wrestled as a whole.”

The Rebels take the mat next at 5 p.m. Thursday at Blooming Prairie.
