Albert Lea boys’ tie Hibbing/Chisholm

The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team went to overtime and tied Hibbing/Chisholm 2-2 Saturday in Hibbing.
Andrew Thompson gave Albert Lea a 1-0 lead 8 minutes into the first period on passes from Matt Cheever and Dalton Flatness.
Hibbing/Chisholm knotted the score at one with a power-play goal by Jake Bestul about seven minutes later. Both teams had 11 shots on goal in the first period.
The Tigers recaptured the lead with a power-play goal by Van Zelenak for the only score in the second period. Lucas Peterson earned the assist.
Albert Lea outshot Hibbing/Chisholm 13-4 in the second period, but the Bluejackets outshot the Tigers 9-5 in the third.
Hibbing/Chisholm tied the game with 1 minute and 2 seconds left in regulation on a goal by Joe Kanipes at even strength.
Albert Lea goalie Garrett Matz and Hibbing/Chisholm goalie Isiah Dilley each had three saves in overtime to end the game in a tie.
Next, Albert Lea (5-6-1 overall, 2-4 Big Nine Conference) will host Rochester Century at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 14.
