LANSING — A local gun store is expanding near Lansing.
The Mower County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved Craig and Sharon Coordes’ request for a conditional use permit to expand their business, Coordes Guns, which has operated on a part-time basis for about 13 years out of the Coordes home.
The Coordes family acquired land next door to their home and plan to expand the store into a full-time business at 53955 269th St. in Lansing.
Craig retired early from working for Canadian Pacific after suffering back issues, and the retirement is allowing him to focus more time and effort on the gun business.
“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” Craig said.
As a licensed dealer, Craig will buy and sell new and used firearms, and he’ll continue doing repair work. He can act as an intermediary, as guns bought online must be shipped through a licensed dealer.
Craig expects the new location could open around Jan. 17 or 18. He expects the business hours to be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The conditional use permit comes with a number of stipulations. For example. the business will have to follow all state and federal regulations and permits.
Environmental Services Director Angie Knish praised Craig and Sharon Coordes for being up-to-date and well-informed about rules and regulations.
“They’ve been very knowledgeable and upfront and forward,” Knish said.
