ANOKA  — A Minnesota man has been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for trying to kill his ex-wife’s attorney in her Fridley office more than three years ago.

Thirty-six-year-old Sheikh Nyane of St. Paul was sentenced Friday for attempted first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said Nyane repeatedly stabbed Terri Melcher in her office on June 11, 2010, after the attorney represented his ex-wife in a custody case involving the couple’s son.

Melcher survived the attack and called police.

Melcher’s artery was punctured during the attack. She also suffered nerve damage to her face.

The Anoka County Attorney’s office says Nyane said at the hearing that he was sorry for what he’d done and that he acted out of anger after losing his son.
