Several area schools closed today as residents woke up to cold temperatures.

Albert Lea Area Schools, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Schools, Lake Mills Community Schools and Northwood-Kensett Schools closed.

Glenville-Emmons Schools and Alden-Conger Schools started two hours late.

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in Albert Lea reached 17 below zero at about 7:30 a.m. With wind chill, the temperature was 35 below zero.

New snow accumulation of less than an inch is expected Friday.
