Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem. Go to the party caucuses on Tuesday evening.

The problem is apathy. Everyone has an opinion, yet most folks want someone else to fix their issue for them. Democracy understands that not everyone has the time to enter politics on big and small stages, from school board members to governor. But democracy does ask us to do our civic duty and chip in a little at a time.

Sometimes, that participation is requested in the voting booth. Sometimes, that participation is requested by asking questions of political candidates.

And sometimes, democracy asks us to gather to discuss issues as part of political parties, often with people we don’t see eye to eye with but are on the same side of the political spectrum. These are the caucuses. Democrats, Republicans and members of the Independence Party need to determine platforms, elect delegates and drum up local support.

The people who participate in the caucuses do so because they love their country — and their state, county and city. They might not have the time or inclination to run for Congress or Legislature, but they care just as much as those who do.

Don’t be another statistic of political apathy. Be a citizen. Go to the caucuses. We will see you there.

• Freeborn County Republican Party precinct caucuses, 6 p.m. registration, 7 p.m. start, Southwest Middle School

• Freeborn County DFL Party precinct caucuses, 6 p.m. registration, 7 p.m. start, Moose Lodge

• Freeborn County Independence Party caucuses, 6 p.m. registration, 7 p.m. start, Brookside Education Center
