ST PAUL — The 182-pound championship was set up exactly how The Guillotine’s polls suggested.
No. 1-ranked Niko Anderson of Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton took on No. 2-ranked Colten Carlson of United South Central Saturday on Day 2 of the Class A state tournament at the Xcel Center.

With 30 seconds left in the third period, Carlson led 3-2. However, Anderson managed a late takedown and tied up Carlson before he could take the lead back.
Anderson won with a 4-3 decision, and Carlson finished as the runner-up.
A fall would have given Carlson his 100th career pin.
Carlson competed at the state tournament with teammates Dylan and Derek Herman.
Dylan pinned his first opponent — Ethan Kimber of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale — in the first round at 145 pounds, but he lost to Hunter Retzlaff of Sibley East in the quarterfinals to fall to wrestlebacks.
After three wins in the consolation bracket, Dylan qualified for the match to decide third place. Retzlaff lost with a 12-1 major decision to eventual champion Larry Bomstad of Atwater/Cosmos/Grove City in the semifinals, and won with a 5-0 decision over A.J. Riley of Chatfield in the consolation semifinals to set up a rematch with Dylan.
The third-place match was closer than the quarterfinal match, but Retzlaff won with a 5-3 decision.
However, Dylan medaled for the third straight year. He took third place at state as a sophomore and junior to go with this year’s fourth-place finish.
“It was short of what we expected, but I did what I could,” Dylan said.
Derek was eliminated one match away from placing. He lost in the first round to Harvey Friederichs of Chatfield but rebounded in the first round of the consolation bracket. After a 6-4 decision over Dietrich Balsbaugh of Trinity, Derek lost by fall to Devin Meagher of Paynesville in 2 minutes and 23 seconds.
