Two Albert Lea men arrested last year for breaking into a Lake Mills home and assaulting a man were sentenced to three years of probation Tuesday in Winnebago County District Court.

If Spencer Adam Edwards, 23, and Cory Wayne Doyle, 22, violate their probation they could face up to 10 years in prison.

Edwards and Doyle in January each pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree burglary.

They were initially charged with first-degree burglary and assault while participating in a felony.

The men were accused of beating Lake Mills man Jaimyan DaVeiga at 104 N. First Ave. on Jan. 17, 2013.

DaVeiga, the son of Tribune Classified Account Executive Michelle DaVeiga, suffered welts to his back and blows to his ribs and head, according to an interview a day after the assault.

He was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea for his injuries and was later released.

Winnebago County Attorney Adam Sauer said in a prior interview that he recommended prison time for Edwards. For Doyle, the prosecutor supported whatever sentence was suggested through the state’s pre-sentence investigation.

A third man, David Rodriguez, 22, who also pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, has not yet been sentenced.

Charges of aiding and abetting first-degree burglary tied to the same case have been dismissed against Cassandra Slater, 20, and Tanelle Roberts, 20, also of Albert Lea.
