50 years ago: 1964

• Gary Neist of the Albert Lea wrestling team won the 112-pound weight class at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament. Mankato won the team title, and the Tigers finished in ninth place.

• Named to the North Iowa Conference All-Star basketball second team were Glenn Kittleson of Northwood-Kensett and Curt Evans of Lake Mills.

• The Tigers team won the Albert Lea women’s volleyball tournament. Team members were Mert Gray, Kare Munson, Marion Reed, Lavonne Swanson, Karen Williamson, Joanne Wiley and Sharon Fredrickson.

• The Austin Packers defeated the Albert Lea basketball team 63-61 in the semifinal round of the Minnesota state basketball tournament. The Tigers were led by Gary Plante with 17 points, Tom Olson, 14, and Jim Bratvold, 13.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• Lunder-Round Prairie won the playoff title in the Brotherhood Dartball League. Members of the team were Don Nelson, Casper Overland, Les Wilhelm, Rick Walther, Al Krueger, Kent Otterman, Dave Hagen, Ray Carlsen, Guy Overland, Darrel Soper, Howard Hoverson and Roger Larson.

• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference hockey team from Albert Lea were Dave Nystrom and Chad Adams. Receiving honorable mention were Bucky Christensen, Spencer Etienne, Eugene Worke and John Savelkoul.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea wrestling team — champions of Section 1AAA — had seven wrestlers advance to the  individual portion of the state tournament. Individual champions in the section were Adam Elseth, Randy Larson and Chris Hable. Runners-up in section who also qualified for state were Zach Hansen, Eric Johnson, Brandon Klukow and Dustin Eggum.

• The NRHEG wrestling team won the Section 2A title and advanced to state. In the individual portion of Section 2A going to the state tournament from NRHEG were section champions Anders Mattson, Nick Christensen and Matt Holland and runner-up Kalen Jacobson.

• The Albert Lea boys’ hockey team gained its first trip to the state tournament when they defeated Mankato 5-4 to win the Section 1A title. Casey Scgumaker scored the winning goal with 2.1 seconds left in overtime.
