Weekend Planner: ‘Werther’ opera to be shown in Albert Lea

Tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role of a tortured poet in the Metropolitan Opera’s production of Jules Massenet’s “Werther.” The performance will be streamed live from the Met stage as part of the “Live in HD” series at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

The opera is sung in French with English subtitles and runs about three hours with one intermission. Coffee and cookies will be available during intermission in the Green Room.

Meet the Met will gather at 12:15 p.m. Friday at Prairie Wind Coffee for a short presentation about “Werther.”  On 10:30 a.m. on Saturday there will be a shortened version of Meet the Met in the Green Room at the theatre prior to the opera.

Tickets for each opera are $20 and $12 for students under 30. Tickets can be purchased at  www.ACTonBroadway.com and www.AlbertLeaCivicMusic.com.

 

Friday

• KATE Radio Home & Recreation show will be all day at Skyline Plaza.

• A March Madness Cattle Show will be all day at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

• A craft show will be at the Northbridge Mall during regular shopping hours.

• A rummage sale will be from 1 to 6 p.m. at Our Father’s House.

• The National Theatre Live presents “War Horse” at 7 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

• Tigers’ Roar talent show will be at 7 p.m. at Albert Lea High School.

• Karaoke with Laurie will be at 8 p.m. at the American Legion in Albert Lea.

• An all-you-can-eat fish fry will be at the Albert Lea Eagles Club with entertainment by “Megaforce.”

 

Saturday

• A rummage sale will be from 8 a.m. to noon at Our Father’s House.

• A craft show will be at the Northbridge mall during regular shopping hours.

• KATE Radio Home & Recreation Show will be all day at Skyline Plaza.

• March Madness Cattle Show will be all day at Freeborn County Fairgrounds.

• Beer Games will be from 4-9 p.m. at Big Island Grille & Bar.

• A St. Patrick’s Day celebration will be at the Albert Lea Moose Lodge. A chill cook-off fundraiser will be from 4 to 7 p.m.  Entertainment will be by “Tom Minehart Karaoke.”

• A Salvation Army Food Drive will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea Eagles Club. Entertainment will be by “Rush Hour,” “Flashback” and “Bad Monkey.”

• Tigers’ Roar, 7 p.m. talent show will be at 7 p.m. at Albert Lea High School.

• A St. Patrick’s Day party will be at the Alden Legion Club. There will be green beer, music and Jell-O shots.

 

Sunday

• A craft show will be at Northbridge Mall during regular shopping hours.

• A breakfast and bake sale will be from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Glenville American Legion. Donations benefit Brick Hall restoration and care.

• A pancake breakfast will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. above the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Albert Lea cross country teams will wait tables.

• All-you-can-eat waffles will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 dollars for children.

• A spuds and sundaes fundraiser will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Emmons American Legion Club. Baked potatoes and sundaes will be provided with a large variety of toppings. Donations go to the Emmons Community Library, Emmons Summer Recreation and downtown beautification.

• KATE Radio Home & Recreation Show will be all day at Skyline Plaza.

• Elementary/Secondary Student Art Show will have an open house from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center.

• Football Sunday will be at noon at the Albert Lea Legion Club. There will be free darts.

• A Lenten piano recital will be at 3 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church. Eileen Nelson Ness will be the featured organist.
