USC band to march in NYC St. Pat’s Parade

WELLS — The United South Central marching band will perform in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York.

The parade takes place at 11 a.m. Monday on Fifth Avenue, starting near 44th Street. It ends at 79th Street. The parade is streamed live online at nycstpatricks parade.org.

The school’s concert choir will join the marching band for the trip to the Big Apple. Eighty-four students will be accompanied by a dozen chaperones along with choir director Angie Braunwarth and band director George Vondracek.

The choir will perform at St. John the Divine. The group returns to Wells on Tuesday.

The students and chaperones will visit Yankee Stadium, Central Park, the set of NBC’s “Today” show, FAO Schwartz, the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum, the New York subway, the Broadway play “Newsies,” the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Times Square. They also will enjoy a dinner cruise around the harbor.

The New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade is the oldest Irish tradition in the United States, according to a news release. The parade first marched in 1762, 14 years before the Declaration of Independence. An estimated crowd of 2 million will watch.
