Freeborn County Sheriffs Office received a report of suspicious activity from a county business. This business received a call from an interpreter service for the hearing impaired. This interpreter was asking to place a large order for a product to be shipped out of state. The interpreter identified the person they were calling for and provided a Discover credit card number.
Suspicion by the employee caused them to process the transaction immediately and it went without incident. The interpreter then said the caller would make arraignments for shipping and the cost would be $850 and asked that they just put this on the bill also. The caller then provided a shipping address to a town in Illinois.
Through investigation contact made with the Discover Card Security Department, it was found that the given card number was identified for excessive and unusual charges and they were watching it. With this report they would be making contact with the card owner.
Discover Card Security Service identified that this is the newest scam theft they have been encountering. Callers will claim to be translators/interpreters and place orders for people with out of state deliver destinations. The cards will then be reported lost/stolen when the card owners are identified and contacted.
