50 years ago: 1964
• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference second team from Albert Lea were guard Jim Bratvold and center Tom Olson.
• The Lu Verne basketball team defeated Rochester 72-66 to win 52nd annual Minnesota state high school title.
25 years ago: 1989
• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference swimming and diving team from Albert Lea were Chris Schmitz and Damon Sonnek.
• Albert Lea graduate Sarah Hareid achieved All-American status at the NAIA national swimming and diving championships.
• Named to the Gopher All-Conference boys’ basketball team from New Richland-Ellendale were Scott Johnson and Tim Boyer; from Alden-Conger-Freeborn was Matt Potter; from Glenville-Emmons was Tim Kral.
• Named to the Gopher All-Conference girls’ basketball team from Alden-Conger-Freeborn were Kris Korman, Lori Jensen and Darcy Evenson; from New Richland-Ellendale were Karla Sponberg and Jill Lorenz; from Glenville-Emmons was Janean Flatness.
• The Minnesota Gophers defeated Siena 80-67 in the second round of the East Region of the NCAA basketball tournament. Willie Burton led the Gophers with 19 points. Jim Shikenjanski, Melvin Newbern and Kevin Lynch each had 14.
10 years ago: 2004
• Conger-Bear Lake won the championship of the Brotherhood Dartball League playoffs. Team members were Jerei Schewe, Tim Westrum, Norman Bangert, Tom Meyer, Daryl Matson, Ron Erickson, Dennis Mattson, Albert Purdy, Al Lindeman and Wayne Erickson.
• Named to the Big Nine All-Conference boys’ basketball team from Albert Lea were Ben Woodside and Stephan Thorn. Receiving honorable mention were Mike Behrends and Parker Skophammer.
• The NRHEG girls’ basketball team defeated LeSueur-Henderson 39-36 to win the Section 2AA title and a trip to the Minnesota state tournament. Erin Anderson scored 11 points. Alison Anderson and Traci Nelson each scored 10 points. NRHEG won its opening-round game over Crosby-Ironton 49-47. Alison Anderson had 14 points and Erin Anderson, 12. They were defeated by Breck 52-29 in the state semifinals. NRHEG lost to Albany 54-45 in the game for third place. Alison Anderson was named to the Class AA All-Tournament team.
