Rain and wet fields, tracks and golf courses led to the cancellation or postponement of 14 of 19 events scheduled for Thursday in the Tribune’s coverage area.

However, the United South Central boys’ golf team braved the elements to slip past Bethlehem Academy 167-171 at Oak View Golf Course.

“It was close, and I was figuring we could shoot a little better, but I’m happy with the win,” said USC coach Brad Huse. “We’ll take it and move on.”

The Rebels (3-0) kept their perfect dual-meet record intact with strong performances by Nick Neubauer and Nate Pederson. The duo finished the nine-hole course in 39 strokes to share medalist honors. Ryan Pederson followed with a 44, and Seth Olson scored a 45.

The Pederson cousins, Neubauer and Olson are all returning letter winners. Ryan and Nate are coming off a season where they both finished in the top 10 at the Class A state tournament and earned All-State recognition.

Huse said he knows the team has high potential.

“On our own course, all four guys are capable of shooting in the high 30s,” he said. “It’s still early. There’s still time and room for improvement.”

Next, USC will play at 1:30 p.m. today at Prairie Ridge Golf Course in a meet hosted by Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. After that, the Rebels will gear up for a battle with Albert Lea at 4 p.m. Thursday at Green Lea Golf Course.
