A 35-year-old Shoreview woman was injured Saturday afternoon after she reportedly went off Interstate 90 and down an embankment, coming to rest on Bridge Avenue north of McDonald’s.

Heidi E. Wise was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The report indicated Wise was driving eastbound on I-90 in a 2003 Honda Accord, when the vehicle reportedly struck the bridge guardrail over Bridge Avenue and then drove off the road.

Why Wise initially hit the guardrail remains unclear. She was wearing her seat belt, and no alcohol was detected. The report stated the road was dry at the time of the crash.

The Albert Lea Police Department, Albert Lea Fire Department and Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.

The Albert Lea Police Department listed the crash as a possible attempted suicide.

Ken Steinken of Rapid City, S.D., witnessed the crash from Hy-Vee Gas about a block away.

He said he heard what sounded like an “explosion,” when he turned to see the car speeding down the embankment and go over the guardrail on the west side of Bridge Avenue, barely missing a couple of other cars. The vehicle ultimately crashed into the guardrail on the east side of the street.

Steinken said people in the vehicles that were almost hit jumped out of their cars to offer help.
