Weekend Planner: Bike-A-Thon, derby make for a busy weekend in area

One of Freeborn County’s biggest fundraisers against cancer will be on Saturday starting at the Sibley Elementary School warming house.

The 42nd annual Freeborn County Bike-A-Thon is slated to begin at 6 a.m.

The 100-mile ride goes through Glenville, Myrtle, Hayward, Geneva, Hartland, Freeborn, Alden and Conger before ending back at Sibley.

Participants have the option to ride the full 100-mile route or as few miles as they wish with rest stops and refreshments along the way.

Riders collect at least $35 in pledges or pay a $35 entry fee.

All money raised goes to support the American Cancer Society.

Friday

• The Naeve Hospital Auxiliary sale will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 20 on the lower level of Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea.

• The “Birds, Buds and Blossoms” exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Albert Lea Art Center, 224 S. Broadway.

• Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 320 College St., will host a salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Menu includes sloppy joes, salads, bars and coffee. Cost is $7. A quilt will be raffled off and others will be available for sale. Tickets for the raffle are one for $5 or three for $10.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present the Tony Award-winning play “Lend me a Tenor.”

The play, written by Ken Ludwig, is billed as a “madcap screwball comedy.” It is directed by Steve Kinney of Austin.

The show will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and can be purchased over the phone at 877-730-3144 or online at www.actonbroadway.com or at the Performing Arts Center box office.

• Karaoke with Laurie will be at Albert Lea American Legion Post 56 from 8 p.m. to midnight.

 

Saturday

• Ruby’s Pantry, a food distribution ministry, will be at Albert Lea Assembly of God church, 1540 South Shore Drive, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring $20, and in exchange they will receive up to $150 of food.

• Crossroads of Destruction will have a demolition derby at 1 p.m. at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Admission price is $12; children 5 and under are free. For more information contact Paul Nielsen at 383-6094.

• New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva High School will have its prom. The grand march, or the grand entrance, will be at 3 p.m. at the school.

• The United South Central High School prom will begin at 7 p.m.

• Dancing with the Freeborn County Stars will begin at 7 p.m. in the Albert Lea High School auditorium. The event is a fundraiser for the Freeborn-Mower chapter of the American Red Cross.

Couples dancing are Ellen and Matt Raleigh, Brigitte Campbell and Jake Vela, Jennifer Sims and Neil Belshan, Jo Anne Stately and Larry Erickson, Jessica Cabeen and John Gray, Amy Gauthier and Jeff Strom, Raquel Hellman and Clint Narramore, and Emily Troe and Dylan Kaercher.

They will be vying for awards in three categories: Top Fundraisers Award, Audience Choice Award and the Star Award.

General admission is $10, and reserved seating is $20.

Sunday

• The Albert Lea Eagles Club will have a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, juice, milk and coffee. Cost is $7.

• Alden American Legion Post 404 will have a breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Menu includes pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage links, milk, juice and coffee. Cost is $5. Children 6 and under are free.

• A benefit breakfast for Donald Wirtjes will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albert Lea Moose Club, 1623 W. Main St.

Wirtjes is a self-employed tradesman in the Albert Lea and surrounding areas. All proceeds will be used to offset expenses incurred by the illness and related treatments.

In addition to the breakfast, there will be raffles, a silent auction and a bake sale.

• Albert Lea Community Theatre will present “Lend me a Tenor” at 2 p.m. at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.

• Just for Kix will have its spring dance show at 2 and 4:30 p.m. at Albert Lea High School.
