50 years ago: 1964

• Tom Struck pitched a three-hit shutout for the Glenville High School baseball team in its 5-0 win over Emmons. Gary Iverson had two hits for Emmons.

• Paul Krueger, an Albert Lea High School graduate, was named head wrestling coach at St. James High School. Paul wrestled at Albert Lea and Luther College and was the head wrestling coach at Truman High School for six years.

• At the Albert Lea Invitational Track Meet, Wells High School placed first with 95.5 points. Albert Lea placed second with 84 points. Tim Colby won the 100- and 200-yard dashes and the pole vault. Rick Jahns set meet records in the discus and the shot put.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• The Albert Lea softball team raised its season record to 4-2 after defeating Rochester Mayo 2-0. Winning pitcher Jill Gaetze threw a two-hitter. Jenny Smeby homered for the Tigers.

• The Albert Lea girls’ golf team defeated Austin 204-208. Scoring for Albert Lea were Lisa Worke, 49; Melissa Boom, 51; Michelle Harves, 52; Leah Mattson, 52; Lisa Christopherson, 52; and Pam Stoltz, 57.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• Girls’ basketball selections for the Tribune’s 2003-04 All-Area First Team were Danielle Rankin, Albert Lea; Beth Yokiel, United South Central; Alison Anderson, NRHEG; Erin Anderson, NRHEG; and Emily Hagen, NRHEG. Second Team selections were Angie Wichmann, Alden-Conger; Jaci Grotewold, Lake Mills; Maggie Giese, USC; Steph Hanna, NRHEG; and Traci Nelson, NRHEG. Named as the Coach of the Year was Mindy Sparby of NRHEG.

• Both the Glenville-Emmons boys’ and girls’ golf teams were victorious over Houston. The boys won 171-184, and the girls won 262-289. Scores for the boys were Kelsey Martinson, 39; Luke Klingson, 40; Matt Schilling, 46; and Dustin Rayman, 46. Scoring for the girls were Brianna Sanderson, 62; Miranda Kral, 63; Kelly Meier, 63; and Kara Honsey, 69.

• The Alden-Conger softball team defeated Medford 4-1. Steph Lackey was the winning pitcher and Tana Reindal had three hits in four at-bats.
