Playing from behind hasn’t fazed the Albert Lea softball team.

The Tigers have trailed going into the sixth inning on three straight occasions and managed to pull off the win each time.

The most recent example was a doubleheader sweep Saturday against Rochester Century at Albert Lea Hammer Complex.

Albert Lea (6-6 overall, 5-4 Big Nine Conference) got back to .500 for the first time since April 11 with a 7-6 Game 1 win and an 8-7 Game 2 win.

Statistics are in the Scoreboard: May 3 post.

After a 2-6 start, the Tigers have won four straight games.

“I’m pleased with the effort we’ve been giving,” said Albert Lea coach Dan Harms. “If they play their game up to their ability, they can play with anybody in the Big Nine. We want to keep this rolling.”

Lynzee Underdahl led Albert Lea at the plate in both games. She was a combined 5-for-8 with four doubles, six RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

“In two tight games, she was a standout for us on offense,” coach Harms said. “She had a great day.”

In Game 1, Haley Harms led Albert Lea’s defense by going the distance in the pitching circle. She faced 32 batters, allowed 13 hits and struck out six.

Rochester Century took a 6-5 lead headed into the sixth inning, but Albert Lea scored two in the sixth to recapture the lead and clinch the win.

In Game 2, the Panthers led 7-1 in the fourth inning. However, the Tigers answered with two runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to find the win column again.

Harms pitched the first three innings and Hanna Schilling, the starting pitcher from Albert Lea’s JV team, took over for the last four. Schilling gave up only one run in 15 at-bats.

Last season, Harms pitched 123 1/3 out of 125 innings. This year, she had been the only person to take the pitching circle for the Tigers.

“Hailey’s been throwing so much for us, that they sent Hanna over, and I put her in,” coach Harms said. “ She played great.”

Along with the pitching, coach Harms said he was impressed with the play at shortstop.

“Megan (Kortan) was diving on the ground, and she played some stellar defense for us,” he said.

Next, Albert Lea will play at 5 p.m. at Mankato East.
