NORTHWOOD — The jury trial for the man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death last summer in Northwood will now be in October.
Tyrone Robin Washington Jr.’s trial had been slated to begin June 2 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, but it has been rescheduled to begin Oct. 20.
Washington, 40, is accused of stabbing Justina Marie Smith, 30, to death on the morning of Aug. 5 in Swensrud Park before he reportedly fled the park in Smith’s 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix.
According to an autopsy, Smith died from what authorities described as “multiple sharp-force injuries.”
Washington faces one count of first-degree murder.
The man earlier this month waived his right to have a jury trial within one year of his arraignment. Court documents stated he and his lawyers needed more time to prepare for trial.
