Skaters ride the rails at City Beach

About 25 teens and young adults came to perform tricks with skateboards, bicycles and scooters Saturday at the skate park at City Beach.
They were there for the Skate Park Season Kickoff, hosted by Golden Valley-based 3rd Lair Skatepark & Skateshop. Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department officials organized the event to introduce revised skate park rules in the wake of a neighborhood divided last summer over whether to move the facility.
Another 25 people, from Mayor Vern Rasmussen to families and friends of the skaters, came to watch. Mark Rodriquez and James “Swamp Trog” Kaul of 3rd Lair emceed the event, ran contests and handed over prizes.
But before that fun could begin, Jennifer Davis of the Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department read the rules from a sheet of paper and noted a new park hours sign.
Here is what was on her sheet of paper:
• Park hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Be responsible as the park is unsupervised.
• The use of helmets and other safety equipment is highly recommended.
• Respect others and their rights to use the skate park.
• Please be respectful of nearby neighbors and their property.
• Keep noise levels down and do not use their property as your route to and from the park.
• Abusive, threatening or obscene language is prohibited.
• Weapons, alcohol and drugs are prohibited.
• No glass containers permitted in the park.
• Please keep the park clean! Pick up the litter!
• Any person violating these rules may be temporarily or permanently excluded from this property.
• Be respectful of the park — no graffiti and no homemade rails or other props.
• This is your park. Your help in preserving it will ensure you can use it for years to come. To report damage or a dangerous situation, call 507-377-4370.
• For emergencies, call 911.
No one wore helmets, but all the participants were respectful, took turns, encouraged each other and no foul language was heard. Rock music played from speakers on a day with perfect weather.
