ST. PAUL — Carlie Wagner capped her senior season with another title Friday during the Class AA state track meet at Hamline University.

After leading NRHEG to back-to-back championships in girls’ basketball this winter, Wagner’s success continued into the spring with her second state title in the high jump.

That didn’t mean she was without a few butterflies.

“You get nervous for basketball games, but for track it’s a different kind of nervous,” Wagner said. “It’s more intense. My stomach was in knots, and my heart was beating fast, but it was really fun.”

Last spring, Wagner qualified for state in the high jump, but she was unable to participate because of tendonitis in her knee.

“I had to sit out and watch,” she said. “It was terrible. So, I was very happy (to bounce back).”

Wagner earned her first state title in the high jump her sophomore year by clearing the same height she did on Friday: 5 feet, 6 inches.

By the time the bar was raised to 5-3, only Wagner, Miki Lee of Norman County and Kendra Ludeman of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton remained in a field of 19 jumpers.

“I started to feel comfortable at the end,” Wagner said. “It was a sense of relief because I knew I was there, and all I had to do was make my height.”

Ludeman was eliminated at 5-4, and it was down to Wagner and Lee. Both jumpers cleared 5-4, which was three inches above Lee’s seed height. Wagner’s seed height was 5-4, but her personal best was 5-9. She broke NRHEG’s school record on April 17 with a leap of 5-7, and she broke it again at Blooming Prairie on May 1 with the 5-9 mark.

NRHEG coach Duey Ferber said Wagner’s leap at Blooming Prairie was the fifth-best jump in Minnesota high school girls’ history.
