After starting the season 0-2, the Lake Mills softball team has won five of its last six games.
The Bulldogs’ latest victims were a pair of teams from the Corn Bowl Conference — Riceville and Rockford — Saturday during a tournament at Lake Mills.
Rockford (6-2, overall, 3-0 Corn Bowl Conference) suffered its first two losses of the season at the tournament. Before the tournament, the Warriors outscored their opponents by a combined score of 48-8.
However, Lake Mills (5-3 overall, 2-0 North Iowa Conference) took down Rockford 11-4.
The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Rockford responded with four runs in the third inning, but Lake Mills pitchers Emily Orban and Hailey Borgmeyer didn’t allow another run the rest of the game.
Kelcey Srp and Ema Anderson led the Bulldogs at the plate by going 3-for-5. Srp had a team-high three runs scored, and Anderson hit a double and scored a run.
Against Riceville (1-6 overall, 0-3 Corn Bowl Conference), Lake Mills dominated from the beginning. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first inning and tacked on five more in the third. Lake Mills managed only three total hits but showed patience at the plate by taking a base on balls 14 times.
Orban led the Bulldogs from the pitching circle by retiring nine batters and walking two.
Next, Lake Mills will play at 6 p.m. today at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.
Last season, Lake Mills swept Garner-Hayfield/Ventura during the regular season 2-0.
