Weekend Planner: “King Lear” comes to Albert Lea

“King Lear,” one of Shakespeare’s tragic plays, is coming to Albert Lea straight from London.

This play is broadcast by National Theatre Live, which aims to showcase the best of British theater live to the world. The plays are being aired from the Royal National Theatre in London.

“King Lear” tells the story of an aging king. He decides to divide his kingdom among his three daughters. The one who praises him the most will get the most land. His favorite daughter says nothing, so he gives the land to his other two daughters.

This causes the king to fall into madness and brings tragedy for everyone. The play has been adapted many times for stage and silver screen and is one of Shakespeare’s most well-known works.

The play will be directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes, director of “American Beauty” and “James Bond: Skyfall.” Simon Russell Beale, who has acted in “My Week with Marilyn” and the film adaptation of “Into the Woods,” will play the title role.

Tickets for the show are $20 for adults and $12 for students. “King Lear” will be shown at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at the Marion Ross Performing Arts Center, 147 N. • Buy fruits, vegetables and more at the Albert Lea Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Northbridge Mall parking lot, 2510 Bridge Ave.

• The Garth Barker Memorial Breakfast will be 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Albert Lea Armory, 410 Prospect Ave. This breakfast supports students pursuing careers in chemical dependency counseling. There will be a silent auction and raffle as well.

• The Bikes for Barker Scholarship Ride departs at 10 a.m. at the Albert Lea Armory, 410 Prospect Ave.

• There will be Jackpot Barrel Racing from 10 a.m. to noon at the outdoor arena of the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, 1031 Bridge Ave. There will be an exhibition at 1 p.m.

• Enjoy Free Sample Saturdays with Zumba in the Park from 10 to 11 a.m. Take part in this fun exercise dance at Edgewater Park Bandshell.

• The Bayside Ski Team alumni ski show will be at 2 p.m. at Edgewater Park.

• There will be a tractor pull at 5:30 p.m. at the Worth County Fair in Northwood.

• The South Eastern MN Saddle Club Association Horse Show will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the outdoor arena of the Freeborn County Fairgrounds, 1031 Bridge Ave. This horse show is sponsored by the Owatonna Saddle Club.

• Enjoy Sunday breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion, 142 N. Broadway Ave. Pancakes, potatoes, scrambled eggs with or without ham, sausages, fruit cups, juice, milk and coffee will be served. Admittance is $7.

• Tee off for the Bancroft Bay Open disc golf tournament is at 10 a.m. at Bancroft Bay Park. Registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m

• Project Earth festival ends at noon at Harmony Park, 79503 298th St., Clarks Grove.

• The Pelican Breeze II public cruise will be 1:30 to 3 p.m., leaving from Frank Hall Park. Be at the park at 1:15 to board. There is a minimum of 10 passengers needed for the cruise to sail. Cost is $10 per person.

• There will be a demolition derby at 5 p.m. at the Worth County Fair in Northwood.
