Children gather for art in park

Kids had the chance to get artistic at New Denmark Park with the annual Kids Art in the Park event, put on by Albert Lea Parks and Recreation.
Kids Art in the Park started at 4 p.m. Wednesday right on schedule, despite the looming storms and rising shoreline of Fountain Lake.
Jenny Davis, recreation program supervisor for the Albert Lea Parks and Recreation Department, said the event is in its fourth year. Each year the event is always somewhat the same, and she said that there’s always a good turnout. If the weather is good, she said she can expect 80 to 100 people to visit.
This year, there was tie-dying, face painting, bracelet making, teepee bird feeder making, string painting and a wishing tree. Children could draw a sidewalk chalk mural on the sidewalks in the park. The Albert Lea firemen judged the drawings at 6 p.m.
Despite the fact that Fountain Lake was encroaching on New Denmark Park, Davis said the park is a good location. In past years the event was held at Central Park, but since New Denmark Park is on a busy road — Bridge Avenue — it attracts more visitors, she said.
Thunderstorms were in the forecast for overnight but the skies stayed dry over the cloudy evening.
“It’s just a fun event to have,” Davis said. “Kids love to do arts and crafts.”
