50 years ago: 1964

• The Legionettes remained undefeated after defeating the Rocketts 28-10 in an Albert Lea City Women’s Softball League game. Elsie Schutzie and Jan Larson led the Legionettes with four hits each. Alice Peterson had three hits for the Rockettes.

• The New Richland Legion baseball team won the West Sub-District title with a 7-5 victory over Alden. Jim O’Hara had three hits, including a triple, for New Richland.

• First Lutheran raised its record to 9-1 in the American Division of the Albert Lea Church Softball League with a 14-10 win over the Christian Reformed team. Dick Anfinson was the winning pitcher and Barry Blackhawk led the offense with three hits.

• Smith-Douglass defeated the Cabin Bar 8-5 in the Albert Lea City Softball League. Curt Hanson had four hits and Mike Weydert picked up the win for Smith-Douglass.

 

25 years ago: 1989

• The Albert Lea Elks U12 boys’ soccer team finished second at the Wayzata soccer tournament. They shut out Champlain 5-0 in the first game. Albert Lea was led by Ryan Anderson, who scored two goals. Lewis Kohl, Tim Morstad and Chris Koppelman each scored one. In its second game, Albert Lea tied Wayzata Plymouth 2-2. Mark Pranke and Koppelman scored for Albert Lea. The third game also was a 2-2 tie against St. Paul. Kohl and Anderson scored goals for Albert Lea. Wayzata Plymouth shut out Albert Lea 4-0 in the title game.

 

10 years ago: 2004

• The Albert Lea Elks U17 girls’ soccer team placed second in its district and advanced to the state tournament. Team members were Mary Cook, Kelly Schreiber, Acacia Clarambeau, Cali Christensen, Ashlee Pence, Stacie Armstrong, Laura Hillman, Ashley O’Byrne, Katie Kjos, Vanessa Lea and Carrie Gilbertson.

• Albert Lea High School gradate Desiree Budd was ranked in the top 30 female distance runners in the United States. In June, the 24-year-old broke a Minnesota age-group record in the Women’s Half Marathon Championship.

• The Albert Lea Colonels lost to Faribault 3-0 in a Southern Minnesota League baseball game. Derek Anderson was the losing pitcher.
